COLUMBIA, Md., Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- W. R. Grace & Co. (NYSE: GRA - news)
today wrote to Montana Governor Mark Racicot and EPA Regional Administrator
Bill Yellowtail and welcomed their initiative to review reported health effects
from a former Grace mining operation near Libby, MT. ``Our concern is that the
people of Libby have many questions and few answers,'' said William Corcoran,
Vice President of Regulatory and Public Affairs of W.R. Grace & Co. ``It
is important to provide answers as soon as possible. We are prepared to meet
with you at your earliest
convenience.''
Grace purchased the former Zonolite mine in 1963 and operated the site until 1990 when the mine was closed. Grace spent several million dollars to remove and control asbestos-containing dust in compliance with appropriate Federal and State laws during that time. Between its closure in 1990 and 1994, the mine was reclaimed in accordance with the Montana reclamation law. Grace sold the property in 1996.
``W.R. Grace & Co. is committed to complete cooperation with your efforts and offers to help you in any way we can. We believe there is no risk to public health or the environment associated with our reclaimed mine site, and we expect your initiative to confirm this,'' said Corcoran.
Grace is a leading global supplier of catalysts and silica products, specialty construction chemicals and building materials, and container protection products. With annual sales of approximately $1.5 billion, Grace has 6,600 employees and operations in nearly 40 countries.
